Puri Saren Agung is a reconstruction. The 1917 earthquake that struck southern Bali levelled much of Gianyar regency, and the palace standing on Jalan Raya Ubud today was rebuilt afterwards under the direction of undagi — the traditional Balinese architect-craftsmen who still work to measurements taken from the patron's own body. The Sukawati line established itself here in the late nineteenth century, and its most consequential figure was Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati. In 1936 he helped found Pita Maha, an artists' collective formed with the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, which set quality standards for hundreds of Balinese painters, carvers and gilders. That patronage explains why Ubud, rather than a larger town, became the island's cultural capital. Legong itself is older. It is a courtly form, refined in the palaces of Sukawati and Peliatan, and its vocabulary of flicked fingers and darting eyes descends from the sanghyang dedari trance dances of village ritual. Architecturally the compound reads as a sequence rather than a single building. A candi bentar, the split gate cleaved cleanly down its centre, opens onto the outer courtyard. Beyond it stands the kori agung, the roofed doorway reserved for higher ground. Paras sandstone carvings soften and darken in the humidity, and frangipani trees drop blossom onto the brick paving. The bale, open pavilions raised on stone platforms, still serve household ritual. The repertoire matters as much as the setting. Legong Kraton, Kecak, Sanghyang and the Ramayana Ballet each belong to a different register of Balinese performance. UNESCO inscribed three genres of traditional Balinese dance on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2015, and the distinctions between sacred, semi-sacred and secular forms are observed here rather than blurred. The palace remains a working residence of the Ubud royal family, which is why the courtyard is swept and offered to before it is lit.
